Music at St Marys – 19th March 2016

The next concert coming up at St Mary’s Church is on Saturday 19th March in aid of the Mayor’s Appeal – which promises to be one of the finest concerts held in this part of Leicestershire for a long time.

The main artists will be a brass Quintet entitled ‘Kensington Brass’ -who have played at Buckingham Palace, Southwark Cathedral, the Royal Albert Hall, St. John Smith’s Square, Kensington Gardens and in many of the Royal College of Music chamber music series. They will be performing their uniquely arranged collection of music, from the Baroque through the ages, interspersed with classic Brass Quintet pieces that have paved the way for these ensembles to reach the fore of modern day Chamber Music making. Designed with something for everyone in mind, the programme highlights the versatility of brass instruments and showcases the talents of individual members.

With them will be special guest Michael Lessiter. Born in Leicester, Michael studied Music and Drama at City of Leicester College of Education. Since his debut with the D’Oyly Carte Opera, he has performed and recorded over a wide spectrum of music. Now a member of the Royal Opera Company in London, he has previously appeared with Opera North, Wexford Festival Opera, Dublin Grand Opera Society, Kent Opera and Opera della Luna. As well as a varied oratorio repertoire, West End credits include Starlight Express, and the Jo Papp production of The Pirates of Penzance at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Michael will be performing a variety of pieces including ‘A Shropshire Lad’, a tribute to the centenary of the death of George Butterworth at the battle of the Somme in 1916 and the 150th anniversary of the birth of Harry T. Burleigh who collected and arranged most of the well known negro spirituals.
